Mindfulness offers hope to tinnitus sufferers
We were really pleased to see this article in the Guardian discussing cognitive therapy and mindfulness as effective tools for the management of tinnitus. The article discusses the use of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy as a tool for people experiencing tinnitus, helping them to learn how to accept and live well with tinnitus, rather than fighting and pushing it away.As we discussed in a previous article about The Psychology of Tinnitus, the best way to live well with tinnitus is to habituate to it, yet the biggest obstacles to habituation are worry and attentional focus. When tinnitus is severe and causes unhealthy levels of stress in the person experiencing it, the person can focus too much attention on the sound which slows down the habitation process (the acceptance) and reduces their ability to engage in other cognitive tasks.Mindfulness does not aim to change the tinnitus’s nature or sound, but the cognitive-based therapy can lead to it becoming less intrusive, to a point where a person can go on to live well. You can read the full article on the Guardian website here:
